その瞬間の、画面に向かって思わず、「そりゃないだろ」と叫び出したくなるような感覚は、今も忘れない。

福島第一原発の事故現場の地図か何かを背景に、画面のアナウンサーだかキャスターだかは、おおむね、こういう趣旨のことを語ったのである。

「（原発事故の状況について）福島の現地対策本部と東京の東電本社、保安院では、それぞれ言う内容が違う。本当に困る。どれが本当なのか、国民は分からない。政府は、発表を一本化してきちんと対応すべきじゃないか。早くひとつにまとめて下さい」

　まったく、何を言っているのか、である。
報道機関であるなら、「発表内容がなぜ違うのか」の要因や背景を取材し、そこに隠された何かがあるならそれを追及し、そして広く伝えることが当然の姿勢ではないか。仮に意図的な隠し事がなかったとしても、東電や保安院では立場が違うのだから、発表内容に多少の違いが生じたとしても、何ら不思議なことではない。

　だから、「事実をとことん調べる」という報道の初歩的大原則に立てば、発表の食い違いは、取材の大きなきっかけになる。敢えて言えば、歓迎すべきことでもある。

　それなのに「発表を一本化してくれ」と頼む。原発事故を起こした電力会社と、その監督に当たるはずの保安院に対し、「一緒にやれ」と頼む。これはもう、私の理解をはるかに超えていた。
